Review: Boots Smooth Solutions Epilator

As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I went travelling with a friend around Australia, New Zealand and Fiji in 2009, and one of the things I bought for the trip was an epilator- I'd never used one before, but I knew I'd want smooths legs for pretty much all of the 3 months I was away- and an epilator was the best choice for me.

Shaving really irritates my legs (which have the most sensitive skin on my body- my legs are very prone to heat rash and general irritation) no matter what I do, and every time I forget to epilate and go back to shaving on the odd occasion I vow that I'll never do it again! But epilating is brilliant! It does leave my skin red for a few hours afterwards, but there's absolutely no irritation and once that fades my legs look and feel fine! :)

I can't remember exactly how much I paid for it almost 3 years ago, but it's currently £29.99 - I think it may have originally been £39.99 because I remember it being about the same price range as some others I was looking at. Either way, I think it's absolutely worth it!

The epilator is mains powered and it comes in a little pouch with the epilator, plug (regular 3 pronged UK plug- a lot of other epilators I looked at had 2 prongs which is much less practical) and a little stiff brush for cleaning stray hairs away (the head of the epilator comes off for cleaning) - the pouch is really handy for travel and storage.

The epilator itself is nicely shaped and fits into my hand nicely, it's very easy to use (just 2 settings controlled by the button) and works very well for me. I have quite fine hair on my legs (just like my head hair!) and managed to pick up every single hair on my leg, and it picks up very short hairs well too. According to the manual you can use this to epilate your bikini line, underarms and face- but I've been too wimpy to use it on anywhere but my legs so far! It has 18 tweezer disc thingies, which is less than many other epilators- but it does mean it will hurt less! (as less hair is pulled out at a time)

The machine is quite loud- (which means it sounds quite scary!) though I don't know how loud other epilators are to compare. And it does hurt- any epilator will- after all it is pulling the hair out at the root! But after a few uses I get used to the pain- it's like plucking your eyebrows really (I remember that hurt like hell when I first started plucking now I barely feel it)- and as long as I keep to a regular schedule with epilating it doesn't hurt much at all. Paracetamol or alcohol is good to use if you've not epilated in a while- nice and numbing :)

Aside from the really long lasting smoothness (I can usually go about 2 weeks with smooth legs between epilating) the lack of irritation is the main plus for me- really there's no possible way for skin irritation to occur as the tweezer thingies only touch hairs, not the skin! And if you push too hard against your skin the machine slows down or stops. I know people can react badly to the wax touching and possibly damaging skin, so this is a perfect alternative.

I really recommend epilating- it's so much more gentle than shaving and the results last much longer! Plus it's a lot cheaper than waxing- you buy this once and it'll last you years :)

Have you ever tried epilating?

    1. Oh dear :( The noise is kinda offputting, but you get used to it- same with the pain too really. The reason I prefer this over the idea of waxing is that you can control exactly when the painfull part will happen! :)

  2. I had one a few years back but it seemed to be snapping the hair rather than plucking it - but I do still think it's better than shaving because I'm quite sensitive too - I'd like to try a different one so thank you for your review of this! x

    1. That doesn't sound good... this one definitely plucks, no ripping or breaking! Yes definitely, I can't beleive how much it affects my legs when I have to shave (it's horrible!) My pleasure- I'm glad it was useful to you :)

  3. It's so good to see epilators becoming more popular as I really do think it is one of the best methods of hair removal!! I'm yet to find the perfect yet affordable epilator... This one seems to have lasted you well, a rarity compared to epilators I have bought in he past. All under £40... Not lasting more than a year :(

    1. It really is! I hope you find one- I can definitely recommend this one, it's lasted me very well (though I rarely use it in wintery months, it does get used at least every other week during spring/summer!) :)

  4. Louise, I'm the same. I used to shave my legs but by the end of the day they would be stubbly. Epilators are great because they remove hair at the roots which for me meant longer lasting results. Like you, my legs are irritated red for while after but it does disappear after a couple of hours. I have to admit when I first turned it on, the sound it made was scary. I wanted to box it back up and send it back. I still somehow convinced myself to use it. The first time hurt like crazy but after awhile my skin became used to it. Now I can never go back to shaving.
