Review: Extra Virgin Olive Oil (as an eye make up remover!)

This seems like a bit of an odd review for me to do, after all I do post recipes and food related things quite regularly, but using a food product as a skincare product does seem a little weird... However, a while ago I read (possibly a blog post or an article, I wish I knew where) about using olive oil to remove their make up and decided that I needed to give it a try.

As I've probably mentioned (many many times) before, I have really dry and sensitive skin, especially around my eyes (which is prone to eczema too) so having a very gentle- but effective- make up remover is pretty important to me.

After my previous remover ran out, I took a small bottle and filled it with Extra Virgin Olive Oil (I've heard this is the best kind of olive oil for the skin) straight from the bottle in the kitchen :) You can get it very cheaply from the supermarket (about £3 for a litre!) and for eye make up removal purposes you need very little, so even a 100ml bottle should last a really long time.

I've been using it to remove my make up for about a week and a half now and I have to say that I don't think I'll ever use anything else, I love it! I use it like any other eye make up remover- just put a few drops onto a cotton pad, hold it against my eye for a few seconds, then wipe it away (along with all of my eye make up) and it removes make up so easily, because it's an oil it just melts off your make up, even waterproof mascara and stubborn lip products; there is absolutely no needing to rub at your eyes or taking ages to remove products- it's a very gentle method. Plus if you get oil into your eyes it wont irritate them at all either (though I guess it does feel a little weird.)

But for me the best thing is that because olive oil has moisturising properties removing your make up actually moisturises your skin! If I were using it to remove make up on my face I'd definitely want to remove the oil before going to bed (I'm not sure if it would clog pores or not, but I'd rather not risk it!) but on lazy evenings I've removed my eye make up and got straight into bed without properly washing my face (I know, very lazy and naughty, but it was late and I was tired!)

In fact the skin around my eyes is really smooth and happy (i.e. not irritated) at the moment, and I can only attribute it to using olive oil as nothing else in my skin care regime has changed :)

I really really recommend trying olive oil as a make up remover, it is SO gentle and effective-  it's especially good for those with sensitive or dry skin, but I think absolutely everyone should try it!

p.s.. Extra Virgin Olive Oil also makes a lovely salad dressing :p
