Nail of the Day- Pink & Blue Zebra! Plus nail polish base coats- help please?

I've been wondering recently about nail polish base coats. My polish seems to last OK on it's own- and better with a top coat (I love Sally Hansen Insta-Dri) but with my terrible nails- which are usually peeling and brittle and generally weak- I think a base coat might make it last even better. So could you help? Do you use a base coat, and do you think it makes a difference? Which one do you use?

Any advice would be much appreciated, I stopped by my local Boots today and was totally overwhelmed at the amount of choice, and I decided that I couldn't buy anything without some research!

And now onto the NOTD; my sister did a really lovely manicure today, she loves the animal print stamper (Konad m57), as you may have noticed most of her NOTD pictures include either the cheetah or zebra print- and I persuaded her to try out a pink and blue combination, using Models Own Pastel Pink and Feeling Blue.

Sorry the pictures aren't that good, they were taken in the evening (damn autumn making it dark so early) and in the kitchen (you probably recognise the tablecloth from my recipe posts!) which doesn't have the best light. Hopefully you can get the idea though :)

Again, any help with base coats will be much appreciated :)

  1. Definitely try out a base coat if you can! It should help your polish to apply smoother and to stick on your nail better. My favorite is Zoya's base coat called "Anchor". Try not to use one thats too thick, though, because I've found that my polish just peels off completely after a few days when using those =/

  2. Thank you, I'm not sure how easy (or cheap) Zoya is here but I'll try and find it :) Yeah I've used a Sally Hansen one (the Miracle Nail Thickener) as a base and it peeled off that day!!!

  3. I switch between OPI Nail Envy, Models Own 3in1 and ELF clear for my base coat. Its good to use one generally though, saves your nails turning yellow. Smooths out imperfections and makes the polish look better on.

Oh and I totally <3 that Sally Hansen top coat too. One of the best things about it is it doesnt smudge nail art :D

  4. I think OPI might be a bit out of my price range (I'll have a look around) and I have the e.l.f. one, but I don't find it makes much difference to my polish longevity. The Models Own 3in1 sounds very good though, might have to give that one a try, thanks! :)

Yes definitely- there is nothing worse than spending ages on a design then smudging it! and it dries so fast (great for the wriggly impatient people like me!)
